About my class
If you were to walk into my classroom on any given day, you'd likely be confronted with somewhat loud, busy students who appear to be chit-chatting. However, it is usually organized chaos, and if you listen closer, you'd find students (mostly) talking about some aspect of what we're reading or getting help on part of their essay. Conversation and collaboration really are an integral part of my teaching.
The vibe in my classroom is definitely laid-back. I have lots of colorful posters on my wall, and purple and teal paper lanterns hang from the ceiling. When students ask about them, I simply tell them I want every day I come to work to feel like a party!
This summer, I put up a new bulletin board that I'm very excited about: my Writer's Resources corner. On this board, I have several posters and handouts available for student use on any assignment. My goal is that students just get up during work time and use these resources to get them started or help them when they get stuck. Ideally, I won't have to tell them which outline they need, or which sentence starter to use, but they will be able to peruse and decide what fits their particular need.

In my journalism class, this is even more the case. In fact, I am usually just "hanging out" while students take over the class. Sure, I edit some stories and give advice on interview questions or photo choices, but really, the students do most of it. I try to get some policies and procedures set early in the year so that the rest of the year flows smoothly, whether I'm there or not. :)
